Frequently Asked
QUESTIONS

01WHO IS THIS ZACH GUY (OR ZACHARIAS, OR KARIA) AND WHAT’S HIS STORY?

12 year ago, Zach made his way to CMU in Pittsburgh from the bustling tech center of India, Bangalore. After many degrees (academic and longitudinal), he has found himself working at Google, where he’s constantly devising new ways to improve the Google Search result page. When not poring over every pixel on Google’s pages, he’s busy chasing one of his numerous, varied, and sometimes fleeting interests: cycling, writing, quantum physics, scotch, coding, cooking, and cheese boards… the list is endless.

Karia is a shortened form of the Malayalam name for Zacharias, and is what Zach is referred to by his family.

Zach’s parents, Neena and George, live in Bangalore, India along with his sister, Teena.

02WHO IS THIS MARYLOUISE (OR MARY, OR ML) AND WHAT’S HER STORY?

Marylouise is an avid design enthusiast with a large heart, a midwesterner at her core, and in love with the California sunshine. She works at IDEO where she helps CEOs of various clients figure out how to rebrand their companies and build strategies and products for a successful future. Yet, she really prefers what she does in her spare time—entertaining friends around the dinner table, hiking and exploring California’s parks, giving interior design advice to friends, and drinking a nice bottle of wine. In her prior life she was a Catholic missionary in Vienna and still calls that city her other home.

Marylouise’s parents, John and Veronica, live in Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin while her favorite brother, George, lives in Los Angeles.

03HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Short story: We met on a dating app.

Longer story: Zach’s friends Brian and Janet suggested Zach and Marylouise meet because it’s hard to find two amazing, good-looking, Catholic single people in San Francisco. So Zach went ahead and did what anyone would in his position—he conspired with a number of people to be introduced to Marylouise in the most complex ways, and ultimately connected on Hinge before any of the Rube Goldbergian plans were put into action. We’re partial to the longer story.

04WHAT’S THE ENGAGEMENT STORY?

After two years of dating, loads of growth and love, and God’s miraculous mercy and grace, Zach asked Marylouise out on an impromptu long weekend drive along the Pacific coast. It was an impromptu trip for one of us 😉. At an undisclosed “hidden beach” along the coast, Zach went on a long monologue (the details of which are lost to time) before getting down on one knee and popping the question. Naturally, that will forever be our favorite beach.

05WHY ARE YOU GETTING MARRIED IN THE TINY TOWN OF MANITOWISH WATERS?

Marylouise grew up first summering in Manitowish Waters before her family moved there when she was 8. It’s also where her parents currently live. Her parents own the resort where the wedding reception will be located. Her first jobs in life were landscaping the resort grounds alongside her dad and joining the housekeeping crew as a teen. It’s a small town loaded with nostalgia, friendships, and treasured memories for Marylouise and her family. We can’t wait to share it with you.

06BUT ISN’T ZACH INDIAN? IS THIS GOING TO BE A BIG, MULTI-DAY, INDIAN WEDDING LIKE IN THE MOVIES?

Well, first off, it won’t be five days long — we’re just going to cram all that excitement into what you might expect from a typical American wedding celebration, with a few beautiful South Indian traditions we’re incorporating.

But don’t be disappointed! Zach’s parents are hosting a second reception in India so Zach’s extended family can celebrate with us. You’re invited to attend that event as well! It’s going to be held on November 20th, 2021 in Kochi, Kerala, India. We know you’ve always wanted a fun excuse to travel to India—here it is!

07HOW SHOULD I DRESS FOR THE WEDDDING?

The wedding and following reception will be formal attire (tuxedos optional). We know COVID has been long and sweatpants have become the new skin, so if you’re drawing a blank on what that means, this article is helpful. If you’re more comfortable in Indian formal clothes, we encourage you to wear that!

08WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT MANITOWISH WATERS?

It’s a small resort town (population ~600) in northern Wisconsin. At its heart is a chain of 10 beautiful lakes, which serves as a magnet for summer tourists. Marylouise’s father’s family has been spending summers in MW for four generations.

Manitowish Waters is also home to the Little Bohemia Lodge, the site of a shootout between the FBI and the Dillinger gang as immortalized in the movie Public Enemies (which was partly shot there). It was here that Marylouise spend her college summers waitressing and bartending. If you’re coming for a longer stay than the wedding, we definitely recommend stopping in for dinner or at least a famous ice cream drink.

09HOW DO I GET TO MW?

See our Travel page!

10WHERE SHOULD I STAY WHILE THERE?

We have arranged accommodations or blocked rooms for all guests. If you’re looking for a place to book your stay, check out the lodging page!

11SHOULD I RENT A CAR?

Unless you’re bringing your own car, we recommend it! There are no lyfts, ubers, or taxis in the Northwoods. If you do need to rent a car upon flying in, we recommend booking that soon! Check out the info on our travel page.

12DO YOU HAVE A HASHTAG THING?

Yep, Zach is the most clever human being alive 😉 and came up with this... #zachgetsmaryed
